The only cities worth building, indeed the only futures worth dreaming of, are those that include all of us, no matter who we are or how we make homes for ourselves.

One of the biggest challenges to solving the crisis of housing in our city is a crisis of imagination. We know that the City of Santa Fe builds between 65-100 units of affordable housing a year. We also know that the need is currently between 5,000 – 8,000 units. Even in doing our very best within the systems we currently have in place, we will never meet the need. We need to rethink what is possible and explore wildly new strategies and ideas. What better way than engaging the arts and science fiction to open up new worlds and collectively dream up a future with housing for all.
‘Housing the Future: A Disruptive Futures Dialogue’ was the first step towards building out this idea. The event provided a platform to examine Santa Fe’s housing crisis and to reimagine what is possible-and necessary-for the sustainability of our city. Using the powerful lenses of science fiction and social equity, renowned social impact designer Liz Ogbu and writer and musician Gabriel Teodros of Octavia’s Brood invited community members to create their own stories and visions for a future in which everyone in Santa Fe has a home. Bridging the past, present, and future, local speakers Zane Fischer, Alicia Inez Guzmán, Joseph Kunkel, Beata Tsosie-Peña, and City Councilor Renee Villarreal discussed current challenges and highlighted initiatives led by advocates and community organizations to address our housing crisis. The event attracted over 175 attendees representing more than 24 local organizations, and over 400 live stream viewers watched online.
In an effort to nurture and continue the conversation, we have worked with our guest artist Gabriel Teodros to design a creative challenge. For details click this link. Submissions from the challenge will be curated into zines to be distributed across our community, highlighting the incredible work being done on the ground and the powerful visions our community has for our future.
Featured Local Guest Speakers: Zane Fischer, Alicia Inez Guzmán, Joseph Kunkel, Councilor Renee Villarreal, and Beata Tsosie-Peña.
